When I write to you about the Roaring 2020s and the coming technological breakthroughs, they all have one thing in common.
The need for better batteries.
Without better batteries that allow for longer driving ranges and more charges, it will be difficult if not impossible for electric vehicles (EVs) to replace gas-powered vehicles.
Self-driving vehicles will be powered by batteries, and so will most of the other components – cameras, sensors, video screens, seats, and more.
Healthcare will be transformed by wearable medical devices and even implantable devices that gather and transmit data in real time… all of which will be powered by batteries.
I could go on and on, but you can already that see a revolutionary new battery technology will have multi-trillion-dollar economic implications.
This isn’t a matter of “if.” It’s a matter of “when.”
In fact, a company in China recently developed a battery pack that lasts for 16 years and more than one million miles. Americans drive an average of almost 14,000 miles a year, so one battery could be your car’s power source the whole time you own it. You could even remove it and put it in a new car. Imagine doing that with an engine!
The next battery breakthrough will go down as one of the greatest and most impactful inventions of the 21st century. And as you would expect, there are huge investment implications here…
A battery that lasts one million miles is really cool. That’s the same as circling the entire globe 40 times! Or like travelling this far into space and taking Earth’s picture:
The biggest obstacles to more people owning electric vehicles are the batteries needing frequent recharging and wearing out after a few years, so these advancements are critical to changing the prevailing mindset.
But they’re coming.
You may not have heard of Contemporary Amperex Technology, but it’s a big player in its industry, behind only Panasonic (PCRFY) and Sanyo. The company is based in Ningde, China, and its stock trades on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. It has multiplied 6X since going public in 2018 and now sports a market cap of roughly $47 billion.
Contemporary Amperex’s customers include BMW, Toyota (TM), and Tesla (TSLA). The talk is that its new million-mile batteries are going in Tesla’s Model 3 sedans that are being made at its new plant near Shanghai.
As important and amazing as this new battery is, Contemporary Amperex typically relies on lithium-ion technology. That’s the current standard, and the basic technology remains the same as in 1980 when John Goodenough introduced the new batteries to the world.
There have been big improvements along the way, but no revolutionary breakthroughs for 40 years. So while the million-mile battery is amazing, it isn’t the next big thing.
The easiest way to see the main technological difference is to focus on the word “solid.” Solid state batteries use solid electrolytes instead of liquid electrolytes. This change from liquid to solid is a major leap forward in virtually every aspect of battery technology.
Solid state batteries are smaller and lighter…
They store much more energy than what is currently available…
They have higher capacity with a lower cost…
They are better for the environment…
And they are much less likely to overheat, catch fire, or explode. (Remember the exploding batteries in the Galaxy Note 7 three years ago?)
The day is coming when you will be able to drive an electric vehicle 1,000 miles on a single charge. When you’ll be able to take a week’s vacation – or even a whole month – and not have to pack a charger.
Future technological innovations require better batteries, and the unbelievable number of batteries that will be needed in the years ahead make this a true hypergrowth trend. It’s still early, so the moneymaking potential is massive.
Those on the right side of this innovation stand to build incredible wealth… just like people did from the creation of the internet and the smartphone.
