A new streaming video service carrying the Redbox name is close to launch.

Redbox Instant — a partnership between Verizon (NYSE:VZ) and Coinstar (NASDAQ:CSTR) — aims to compete directly with Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX). While the companies are being very quiet about the development of Redbox Instant, some details have leaked out, reports GigaOm.

The service initially will be available on the web, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS devices, Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox, and select television and Blu-ray systems. At the start, the number of videos available for streaming will be understandably smaller than Netflix’s current catalog.

Here are a few more things about the service:

  • Launch date is tentatively Dec. 17.
  • Cost for the service: $6 per month.
  • An extra $2 per month gets subscribers four Redbox rental credits per month.
  • Rentals for newer titles will start at 99 cents.
