The lawsuit was between Apple and Smartflash and concerned patents held by the latter. A federal jury ruled that the tech company had infringed on three patents that were owned by Smartflash. These patents were infringed upon with technology that was being used in iTunes, reports Reuters.

According to the jury for the lawsuit, Apple not only infringed on the patents, but it did so willingly. The tech company plans to appeal the jury’s decision and tried to have the lawsuit thrown out before it started. Smartflash was originally seeking $852 million in damages for the patent infringement, Reuters notes.

Apple has claimed that Smartflash is trying to take advantage of the patent system for work it has done. Smartflash has been involved in several other lawsuits over patent infringement. The company has no products and only works to maintain seven patents  that were granted to it from 2008 to 20012, Bloomberg notes.

AAPL shares were down 1% as of Wednesday morning.
