Here are seven things to know about it:

  • The “all-in-one” headset does not require any external sensor or cord to operate as it is completely wireless.
  • A big advantage the Intel product has over other VR headsets is that you can see your hands, and it has a camera that is capable of tracking objects and people around the room to prevent any accidents.
  • The device is a “merged reality” creation, which combines VR technology with augmented reality capabilities. The latter can alter or add objects to what you see while using the device (Pokemon Go is an augmented reality app).
  • Intel has the support and technology of Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) as the headset’s hardware includes Satya Nadella and co.’s Windows Holographic platform.
  • “One of those fundamental shifts that redefines how we work, how we’re entertained, and how we communicate in the world,” Intel CEO Brian Krzanich said.
  • Not much else is known about the hardware yet.
  • The cost and release date of Project Alloy has yet to be announced.

INTC stock is up 0.9% Tuesday. MSFT stock is down 0.6%.

Oculus Rift recently partnered up with Minecraft to develop a version of the game that uses the company’s VR headset.

Earlier this summer, Sony Corp (ADR) announced it is also launching VR technology for PlayStation gaming.
