Instagram, which is owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB), is going to give users more control over comments on their posts.

Instagram, New Instagram Feature

The new system will allow Instagram users to create filters and delete comments that contains certain words or phrases that they might find offensive. The goal of this is to let users better control comments on their posts and it could help reduce the amount of harassment and abuse on the social media platform.

Instagram has already been testing the new feature out for certain users and will reportedly start adding it in the coming weeks. High-profile users on the website will be given top priority, but it will be added to all accounts. Another new feature will allow users to completely turn off comments on posts. Users will be able to decide if they want to use this option on each post they make, reports The Washington Post.

“That’s great, but also too little, too late,” Dana Wollman, the Managing Editor of Engadget, said in an opinion piece. “This should have been a priority when Instagram launched six years ago. Even now that it is, the moderation tools are skimpy, and only famous people have the privilege of using them.”

Online harassment has been a problem for many social media companies as they look to stop users from offending each other without facing criticism of limiting free speech. Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) recently banned Breitbart tech editor Milo Yiannopoulos from the site over claims of harassment.
