Detente?: After waging a two-year struggling in U.S., European and Asian courts, Apple (AAPL) and Samsung are discussing a possible accord that would put an end their seemingly endless patent infringement litigation, the Korea Times notes. An official with the Korea Fair Trade Commission says that the two companies are negotiating a deal over patent royalty payments. The talks are described as at a “working level” and significant differences remain about how royalty payments would be calculated and paid. Apple is requesting more than $30 in payments for every Samsung device that infringes on its patents. Samsung reportedly considers that too high, but would like to see a comprehensive cross-licensing deal to resolve all outstanding litigation. Korean authorities are cooperating with American and European regulators to help the companies work toward a deal. This would mark the second attempt by Apple and Samsung to reach a patent deal. Last year, Tim Cook and Samsung head Choi Gee-sung held 17-hour marathon talks that ultimately failed to produce an agreement. The renewed effort comes after a California jury awarded Apple $280 million in damages on top of an earlier award of $600 million against Samsung for patent violations.

Car Race: The ongoing battle between iOS and Google’s (GOOG) Android is about to open a new front in popular automobiles, the Wall Street Journal notes. Sources say that Google will shortly announce a partnership with German luxury auto giant Audi to create vehicle infotainment systems based on Android. The move is meant to counter work by Apple to integrate iOS into in-car systems in vehicles made by General Motors (GM), Mercedes-Benz and BMW.

Less: Apple CEO Tim Cook took home a little less money than he might otherwise have this year, Time notes. Regulatory filings indicate that Cook was paid $4 million less this year, about a 10% cut from 2012. The lower pay was due to Cook’s request to Apple’s board to link half of his stock grants to Apple’s stock performance. This year, Cook received $1.4 million in salary, a $2.8 million cash bonus and stock grants worth about $36.4 million.
