Wal-Mart Asks Computer Makers for Quicker PC Sleep

Time is money. Sometimes it’s also electricity, which costs money. Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) has requested that manufacturers of the desktop computers and laptops that it retails reduce the amount of time their machines take to go to “sleep” while not in use.

Company officials say that trimming the default settings to make the machines fall into sleep mode faster will cut down on power consumption and benefit the environment, Reuters notes.

Most computers come with settings that allow them to power down if no one has touched their screens, keyboards or mice after a certain period of time. The default sleep settings vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, but most set their computer’s screen to turn off after 15 minutes and the PC to enter sleep mode after a half hour.

The company is asking computer makers to reset the default settings to shut off the screen after 5 minutes and the system in 15 minutes.

Wal-Mart says its customers are more interested in saving money than saving the environment, but this form of environmental friendliness could save big bucks for them. The company projects $10 million in electrical costs could be saved over the lifetime of the computers it sells if the new default settings are adopted.

The retailer has recently partnered with other corporate leaders, including Procter & Gamble (NYSE:PG) and Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) to promote sustainability and environmental awareness.

Shares of Wal-Mart rose more than 1% in Thursday afternoon trading.
