Chances are, if you want to buy “socially responsible investing” (SRI) funds, your first priority is values (but not the monetary kind) and the second priority is performance. But do investors need to sacrifice performance to invest in a way that aligns with their values? There was a time when this was generally true, but the idea that socially responsible investing will limit your returns is beginning to change.

socially responsible sri fundsBeing socially responsible and achieving above-average returns on a consistent basis can be a challenge. For example, if a fund’s socially conscious objective is to eliminate entire sectors, such as energy or defense, and those sectors are leading the market, the fund manager will need to compensate with superior security selection in other areas.

But today’s selection of SRI funds, which is more than 300 in number, offers socially conscious investors a broad variety of value screens and objectives to meet their own preferences. Some funds may invest generally in companies that are good corporate citizens or they may have specific religious value screens to pass.

Here are three of the best SRI funds available to buy today.
