Starbucks’ #RaceTogether campaign, which was designed to spark conversations about race relations, was negatively received by many people. The company saw backlash on Twitter (NYSE:TWTR) and Corey duBrowa, its Senior Vice President of Global Communications deleted his account during it, reports CNNMoney.

DuBrowa reactivated his account less than a day later and said why he deleted it in the first place. He claims that he felt “personally attacked in a cascade of negativity,” and that he became “overwhelmed by the volume and tenor of the discussion,” CNNMoney notes.

Here’s what some Twitter users had to say about Starbucks’ #RaceTogether campaign.

  • “WOW! Just walked into my local #Starbucks & there are folks having a great conversation about race relations! Said no one ever.#RaceTogether”
  • “Starbucks baristas don’t get paid enough to facilitate our difficult cultural conversations. #RaceTogether”
  • “Hey @Starbucks do you REALLY want to have this convo with a big black angry under-caffeinated man who’s late for work? #RaceTogether”
  • “There will be plenty of baristas at Starbucks who will probably get a drink thrown in their faces if they say something stupid #RaceTogether”
  • “Let’s leave “race relations” in the hands of 19 year old, white, privileged hipsters. That’s the ticket! #RaceTogether”

Starbucks #RaceTogether campaign is optional for employees. Customers can also request to have a cup without Race Together written on it.
