Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) layoffs are a hot topic as the tech giant has just announced a new round of job cuts affecting game development studios under Bethesda.
The latest news notes that the Microsoft layoffs will see it close down Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog Studios, Roundhouse Games and Tango Gameworks. These layoffs come after Microsoft bought Bethesda three years ago to beef up its catalog of game developers.
Results from these studios have ranged from failures to successes recently. For example, Arkane Austin’s Redfall was a disappointing release from the studio last year. On the flip side, Tango Gameworks’ Hi-Fi Rush was celebrated and saw high sales.
Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty said the following about the Microsoft layoffs in an email obtained by IGN:
“Today I’m sharing changes we are making to our Bethesda and ZeniMax teams. These changes are grounded in prioritizing high-impact titles and further investing in Bethesda’s portfolio of blockbuster games and beloved worlds which you have nurtured over many decades.”
Details of the Microsoft Layoffs
Microsoft hasn’t said how many employees are being affected by these jobs cuts. What we do know is that some teams are faring better than others. For example, Alpha Dog Studios’ team is being absorbed by ZeniMax Online Studios, the creator of The Elder Scrolls Online.
Those affected by the Microsoft layoffs are being notified today. Booty maintains that these job cuts are not a “reflection of the creativity and skill of the talented individuals at these teams or the risks they took to try new things.”
MSFT stock is down slightly as of Tuesday afternoon.
