Gold Stalls on Weak Consumer Sentiment Data

Gold Silver GLD IAU SLVData showing weakening U.S. consumer sentiment sent gold down slightly in Friday trading. The metal had risen earlier in the trading session, buoyed by signs of growing gold demand in China. However, the rally stalled after the release of the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan’s index of consumer sentiment, which registered its lowest reading in a year.

Gold futures for February delivery fell fractionally to $1,687 on Friday, according to CME Group. Gold traded as high as $1,695.10 and as low as $1,683.30. Gold bullion closed in London at $1,686, according to BullionVault.

Silver futures for February delivery rose 0.4% to $31.92 per ounce. Friday’s high for silver was $32.05 an ounce, while the low was $31.71.

Gold and silver funds were mostly lower in Friday trading.

  • The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:GLD) dipped 0.2%.
  • The iShares Gold Trust (NYSE:IAU) also declined 0.2%.
  • The iShares Silver Trust (NYSE:SLV) rose 0.5%.

Gold and silver mining ETFs mostly fell during the day.

  • The Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:GDX) gained 0.2%.
  • The Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:GDXJ) sank 0.7%.
  • The Global X Silver Miners ETF (NYSE:SIL) decreased 0.5%.

Gold mining shares were mixed, with Newmont Mining (NYSE:NEM) rising the highest.

  • Agnico-Eagle Mines (NYSE:AEM) was flat.
  • Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX) slid 0.1%.
  • Eldorado Gold (NYSE:EGO) gained 0.1%.
  • Goldcorp (NYSE:GG) slipped 0.1%.
  • Kinross Gold (NYSE:KGC) rose 0.5%.
  • Newmont Mining climbed 1%.
  • NovaGold Resources (AMEX:NG) dipped 0.2%.
  • Yamana Gold (NYSE:AUY) increased 0.4%.

Silver mining shares were also mixed on Friday.

  • Coeur d’Alene Mines (NYSE:CDE) rose 1.4%.
  • Hecla Mining (NYSE:HL) increased 0.8%.
  • Pan American Silver (NASDAQ:PAAS) fell 0.7%.
  • Silver Wheaton (NYSE:SLW) dropped 0.7%
  • Silver Standard Resources (NASDAQ:SSRI) sank 1.9%.
